Plastic Packaging Recycling using Intelligent Separation Tech¬nology for Materials (PRISM), is an innovative way to rapidly sort through packaging based on intelligent labels and other invisible markers that can be detected easily.
PRISM technology uses commercial labelling and decoration methods, such as high performing luminescent compounds, to mark plastic packaging. It is an efficient way to sub-categorise materials such as food grade PP, HDPE & PET packaging etc., and automatically sort them at high speeds. This technology has the potential to open up new markets for recovered plastics and also boost recycling processes.
Another technology developed for the sorting and separation of plastic, is labelling, which can be used for marking and identification. These labels help in sorting materials based on their type and use. For example, a message can be integrated in the packaging design to communicate to a sorting machine as well as to consumers; "I am a PET bottle that was used for food. I can be used for food-grade packaging, again!"
